Helicobacter pylori and the Bacterial Theory of Ulcers

چکیده
Dr. Robin Warren The story begins with Dr. J. Robin Warren. Dr. Warren was a pathologist at the Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) in Western Australia. A pathologist is a medical doctor who examines tissues and is responsible for the accuracy of laboratory tests. Pathologists interpret the results of these examinations and tests and provide information important for a patient’s diagnosis and recovery. Part of Warren’s duties as a pathologist was to examine histological sections from gastric biopsies. With the arrival in the early 1970s of the fiberoptic endoscope, it was increasingly common to fi nd good, well-fi xed sections from gastrointestinal tissue. Prior to this, it was unusual for a pathologist to see good histological sections from any part of the stomach that was not post mortem. In 1979, after examining a hematoxylin and eosin-stained section of a stomach biopsy from a man with severe gastritis, Warren noticed a thin blue line on the surface of the tissue. When he increased magnification, he thought he saw bacteria.

Helicobacter pylori and Ulcers: a Paradigm Revised
When scientists identified Helicobacter pylori as an infectious agent responsible for peptic ulcer disease, it completely transformed our understanding of the microbiology and pathology of the human stomach. That was in 1982. Before then, "no acid, no ulcer" succinctly described the accepted medical paradigm: stomach ulcers occurred when excess acid damaged the gastric mucosa, and treatment sho...
متن کاملAssociation of Helicobacter pylori Infection With Colon Cancer and Adenomatous Polyps
Background and objective: Helicobacter pylori infection is one of the most common chronic bacterial infections in the world, especially in the developing countries. This bacterium is the cause of many diseases such as lymphoma, gastritis, peptic ulcers, and stomach cancer. According to recent reports, H. pylori infection can potentially increase the risk of colon cancer. The cu...

Background: Helicobacter pylori infection is one of the most common gastrointestinal infections worldwide. Predominant T-helper 1 (Th1) responses with increased gamma interferon (IFN- γ) levels have been proposed to play an important role in H. pylori-induced peptic ulcer. However, bacterial factors contributing to the initiation of Th1 polarization of H. pylori-specific immune responses have n...

Background and Purpose: Helicobacter pylori are a bacterial pathogen evolved to chronically colonize the gastric epithelium and causes gastritis, peptic ulcers, and even gastric malignancies in few infected humans. More recently, a pathogenicity island has been identified within the H. pylori genome that contains a cluster of genes, including cagE. The aim of the current study was to investig...
متن کاملIn vitro Susceptibility of Helicobacter pylori to Licorice Extract
Helicobacter pylori is the causative agent of gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. Eradication of H. pylori is hard to achieve and often require multiple antibiotics regimens. These regimens are quite expensive and have substantial side effects. Licorice is a traditional drug which is frequently used for gastric discomforts in Iran. The susceptibility of H. pylori to the extract of licorice has ...
